What is it like to stay in a traditional riad in the Medina?
Marrakech's Medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. It is the historic heart of the city: cobbled lanes winding between souks, mosques, madrasas and fondouks dating from the 10th to the 18th century. Cars cannot enter the narrow streets, you move on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn carriage. Luggage is carried from the nearest taxi drop-off point by porters with their carts, usually a 5-to-15-minute walk. The mythical Jemaa el-Fna square, with its storytellers and musicians, sits at the centre of the Medina.
Riads are traditional Moroccan houses built around an inner courtyard with a fountain and garden. From the outside, their plain façade gives nothing away; inside, zelliges, carved stucco and moucharabieh screens reveal sumptuous architecture. Since the 1990s, many riads have been restored as guesthouses or private rentals, complete with pools, hammams and table d'hôte dining. Staying in a Medina riad means living in the authentic Marrakech, a few minutes' walk from every monument and the best traditional restaurants.
