The Marrakech Medina: staying in a traditional riad
Marrakech's Medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. It is the historic heart of the city: cobbled lanes winding between souks, mosques, madrasas and fondouks dating from the 10th to the 18th century. Cars cannot enter the narrow streets — you move on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn carriage. Luggage is carried from the nearest taxi drop-off point by porters with their carts, usually a 5-to-15-minute walk. The mythical Jemaa el-Fna square, with its storytellers and musicians, sits at the centre of the Medina.
Riads are traditional Moroccan houses built around an inner courtyard with a fountain and garden. From the outside, their plain façade gives nothing away; inside, zelliges, carved stucco and moucharabieh screens reveal sumptuous architecture.
