Spring (March-May), the prime season

Spring is the most recommended time to visit Marrakech. Average highs climb from 24 °C in March to 30 °C in May, with nights still cool at around 10-15 °C. Rainfall is low and the gardens, Majorelle, Menara, Agdal, are at their best.

It's also the top season for Atlas excursions: snow has melted from accessible passes and the Ourika waterfalls are at their peak flow. Crowd-wise, March and November are the most balanced months: enough visitors that everything is open, without the queues of French school holidays.

Riad patios start warming up in April-May: perfect timing to enjoy a morning sunbathe on the terrace before summer heat sets in. All our Medina riads have a patio with a plunge pool.

Autumn (September-November), the heat gone, golden light

Autumn is the other great window. September is still warm (max. 32 °C) but the stifling summer heat is over. By October, highs drop to 28 °C with nights around 15 °C, perfect conditions for exploring the Medina on foot, morning to evening.

The light in Moroccan autumn is particularly beautiful: warm and golden in the morning, ideal for the souks and the ochre houses of the Medina. The Atlas begins to snow in November, giving spectacular mountain backdrops from riad rooftop terraces.

The pool is still pleasant through October. November marks the start of the 'mild winter': a few showers, but nothing like a European autumn.

Summer (June-August), very hot, manageable with the right strategy

July and August are the hottest months: average highs reach 37-38 °C at midday, with nights around 20-21 °C. It's not the most comfortable time to walk the souks at 2 pm, but Marrakech is very liveable if you adjust your rhythm.

The strategy that works: early start (8 am-noon for sightseeing), back at the pool or riad from noon to 6 pm, then out again at sunset. The souks come alive again around 7-8 pm and Jemaa el-Fna square is spectacular at night.

Summer is also low season for tourism: rates are generally lower and riads less full. If you come in summer, a pool is not a luxury, it's essential. Our Medina riads and several Hivernage apartments have private or shared pools.

June, at the start of summer, is still relatively tolerable (max. 34 °C) before the intense heat of July-August.

Winter (December-February), mild by day, cold at night

Moroccan winter surprises European visitors with its sunshine: even in December-January, Marrakech averages 7 hours of sun per day and highs between 19 and 21 °C. It's mild in the daytime, you can eat on a terrace and sightsee in light clothes.

Nights are cold, however: lows drop to 6-8 °C. Layering is key, bring a jumper, a jacket and an extra layer for evenings. Traditional Medina riads built in stone are not always well insulated, check that your accommodation has heating.

Winter is low season: attractive rates, emptier souks, a more local atmosphere. It's an excellent time for a cultural stay (museums, crafts, food) or Atlas valley excursions, where snow-capped peaks make for dramatic scenery.

Ramadan, a unique experience, worth planning for

Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting: its date shifts each year according to the lunar calendar (it moves about 11 days earlier each year). Before booking, check the exact dates for your travel year using an official calendar.

Visiting Marrakech during Ramadan is an intense and unique cultural experience: the Medina comes alive at the breaking of the fast (Iftar), small restaurants serve traditional dishes, the atmosphere is festive at night. Some restaurants and cafés close or reduce hours during the day, this requires some adjustment but does not make the trip difficult.

The post-Ramadan period (Eid al-Fitr) can see high local demand for accommodation: book ahead. Our team can advise on dates and practical adjustments.

Which place suits which season

The season changes more than your packing list: it changes what matters in the place you book. In summer a pool and air conditioning stop being a bonus, of our 18 addresses, 12 have a pool and 9 have air conditioning.

In winter the logic flips: days are mild but nights are cold, and the hammam becomes the thing worth having, 6 of our addresses have one. A patio riad is then lived from the inside, with the terrace saved for midday sun.

Spring and autumn work for everything, which is exactly why the best addresses go earliest in those months. If your dates are fixed in those seasons, ask early, we confirm availability on WhatsApp, with no commitment.

For a long or off-season stay, an equipped kitchen changes the daily budget: 11 of our places have one.

What to pack by season

Spring and autumn: light clothes during the day, a light jacket or fleece for evenings. Good walking shoes for the Medina alleys and excursions.

Summer: light, breathable clothing, a hat, high-SPF sunscreen. A light layer for evenings (air conditioning in some restaurants). Comfortable sandals.

Winter: layering, t-shirt, jumper, jacket. A light scarf. Nights can be genuinely cold in a stone riad.

All seasons: cover shoulders and knees to visit mosques and medersas (lightweight fabric scarves available in the souks on the spot).
