Practical guide
Getting around Marrakech: taxis, on foot, calèche and car hire
The Marrakech Medina is best explored on foot — most derbs (narrow alleys) are too tight for cars. For the rest of the city, the petit taxi is the simplest and most widely available option. Always agree the meter is running or settle on a fare before you get in. Guéliz (the new town) is walkable and car-friendly; a short taxi ride connects it to the Medina. Horse-drawn calèches trace the ramparts for a scenic tourist ride. My Kasbah's 24/7 concierge team organises transfers, private drivers and excursions — directly on WhatsApp, no commission.

The Medina on foot: the only real way to explore
Marrakech's historic Medina is a maze of medieval alleys — the derbs. The vast majority are too narrow for cars, and often for motorbikes too. Walking is not just one option among many: it is the only way to reach the souks, the fondouks, the madrasas and the historic riads.
From your riad, most major Medina destinations (Jemaa el-Fna, the souks, the museums, the Ben Youssef Madrasa) are 10 to 20 minutes on foot. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes or thick soles — the cobblestones and uneven alleyways take their toll.
For navigation, the main arteries (Rue de Bab Doukkala, Avenue Mohammed V, Rue Riad Zitoun el-Jedid) are accessible by car and serve as useful landmarks. Navigation apps work in the Medina, but street names displayed do not always match local signage — visual orientation remains essential.
Petit taxi: the everyday solution
The petit taxi is Marrakech's workhorse urban transport. These small city cabs (often beige or cream) cover short in-city trips: Medina to Guéliz, the train station, the palmery, residential neighbourhoods. They do not serve the airport — that is the grand taxi's or shuttle's role.
Golden rule: ask the driver to start the meter, or agree a fare before you get in. The night rate is generally slightly higher than the day rate. Taxis may pick up additional passengers heading the same way — this is normal and perfectly acceptable.
To hail a petit taxi, raise your hand at the roadside on a main street. From a riad inside a derb, walk to the nearest main artery first. The ride from the Medina to Guéliz takes just a few minutes.
Grand taxi: airport and long-distance
The grand taxi is a larger vehicle (often an older saloon) used for longer journeys: airport runs, intercity trips to Essaouira, Ouarzazate or Casablanca, and Atlas or desert circuits. In shared mode it waits until enough passengers are heading the same direction. Privatised, you pay for the whole vehicle — practical for groups or organised excursions.
Grand taxi stations are found at the Medina gates (Bab Doukkala, Bab er-Rob) and in the new town. For airport runs, agree the fare upfront. My Kasbah can arrange this transfer directly on WhatsApp — our local team knows the going rates and handles the logistics for you.
Calèche: scenic ride around the ramparts
Horse-drawn calèches are a quintessentially Marrakchi tourist experience. They circulate mainly around the Medina ramparts and along the avenues of the new town. A calèche is not a practical means of getting from A to B inside the Medina — but it is a lovely way to follow the ochre ramparts at the end of the afternoon.
Same rule as for taxis: agree the fare before you board. Calèches station near Jemaa el-Fna and on the avenues of Guéliz. The duration and route are negotiable — a circuit of the ramparts typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the itinerary.
Guéliz and the new town: easier by car or on foot
Guéliz is built for cars: wide avenues, pavements, clear signage. It is easy to walk between its restaurants, galleries and shops. A petit taxi covers the journey from the Medina in just minutes.
If you have rented a car, Guéliz is the most practical area for parking and getting around. Parking inside the Medina is virtually impossible — use the paid car parks at the Medina gates (Bab Doukkala, Bab Jdid) and continue on foot.
Car hire and scooters
Car hire makes sense if you plan day trips outside Marrakech: Essaouira, the Ouzoud waterfalls, the Agafay desert, the Dadès gorges. For getting around the city itself, a car offers few advantages — the Medina is inaccessible by car and parking in the new town is limited.
Rental agencies are at the airport and in the new town. Check the insurance terms and the vehicle's condition before leaving. Scooters are used by locals but are not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with the busy Medina alleys. My Kasbah can suggest trusted local suppliers on request.
Which transport option to choose in Marrakech?
Depending on your destination and circumstances, each option has its strengths.
| Option | Best for | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| On foot | Medina, souks, historic sites | The only real option in the derbs; wear good shoes |
| Petit taxi | Medina ↔ Guéliz, short urban trips | Agree meter or fare first; plentiful and available |
| Grand taxi | Airport, day trips, intercity travel | Shared or private; agree fare upfront |
| Calèche | Scenic tour of the ramparts | Leisure option, not practical transport; negotiate the price |
| Rental car | Day trips outside Marrakech | Little use in city; park at Medina gates and walk |
| Concierge transfer | Arrivals, departures, groups, excursions | My Kasbah WhatsApp 24/7; trusted driver, no commission |

Frequently asked questions
Can you drive a car inside the Marrakech Medina? +
No — virtually all the derbs (alleys) of the Medina are too narrow for cars. Some main streets within the Medina are passable, but to reach a riad inside a derb the final stretch is always on foot. Park at the Medina gates and walk.
How do you recognise a petit taxi in Marrakech? +
Petit taxis are typically beige or cream and operate within the city. To hail one, simply raise your hand on a main street. Before getting in, check that the driver starts the meter or agree on the fare for your journey.
How do you get from the Medina to the airport? +
Petit taxis do not serve the airport. Take a grand taxi (agree the fare upfront from a station) or use our concierge service: My Kasbah sends a driver to your door via WhatsApp, with no platform surcharge.
Are ride-hailing apps available in Marrakech? +
Ride-hailing app availability in Marrakech is variable and subject to change. The petit taxi remains the most reliable and widely available option for urban journeys. For a guaranteed transfer, My Kasbah arranges a trusted driver on request.
Is it safe to walk around the Medina at night? +
The Medina is generally lively and well-frequented in the evenings, especially around Jemaa el-Fna. In quieter alleys, stay aware as you would in any old-town neighbourhood. Our concierge team can point out the most practical walking routes from your riad.
Can My Kasbah organise day excursions? +
Yes — it is one of our core concierge services. Our team arranges drivers, privatised grand taxis and bespoke circuits for the Agafay, Essaouira, the Ouzoud waterfalls, the Atlas or the desert. Contact us on WhatsApp with your dates and preferences.
