How many days in Marrakech? The ideal length for your trip
The short answer: 3 full days cover the essentials of Marrakech (Medina, souks, Jemaa el-Fna, Majorelle, a hammam, a rooftop dinner). 4 to 5 days allow for a day trip. A week gives you a slower pace and several excursions. But the ideal length depends above all on your travel style. First visit, family with children, wanting to unwind or to explore — each profile has its natural trip length. This guide walks through what each format concretely allows, without overselling.
- →3 days: covers the Medina highlights, Majorelle & YSL, souks, Jemaa el-Fna, hammam — the satisfying minimum for a first visit.
- →4–5 days: the most recommended format, with one day trip (Agafay desert, Ourika valley, Essaouira).
- →A week: relaxed pace, multiple excursions, discovering less-touristed neighbourhoods.
- →The Sahara is NOT a day trip from Marrakech — a round trip requires a minimum of 2–3 days.
- →The ideal length depends on: first visit vs. return, sightseeing vs. relaxation, desired excursions.

3 days in Marrakech: the satisfying minimum
Three full days cover the essentials without feeling rushed. The first day is naturally devoted to the Medina: wandering the souks, discovering Jemaa el-Fna in the evening, dining on a rooftop overlooking the square. The second day fits the major sights — Majorelle Garden and the YSL Museum, Bahia Palace, the tanneries — with a hammam session in the late afternoon. The third day leaves room for the Guéliz or Mouassine neighbourhoods, quality shopping, a cooking class.
Three days is the minimum to leave without the frustration of having only skimmed the surface. Any less and the city stays superficial. Any more and it starts revealing its hidden layers.
This format works particularly well for travellers combining Marrakech with another Moroccan destination (Fes, the Atlantic coast), for long weekend escapes, or for business trips with a few days of sightseeing added on.
4 to 5 days: the most recommended format
Four to five days is the length we most often suggest. The first two or three days cover the Medina at a comfortable pace, without rushing from one sight to the next. The fourth or fifth day is dedicated to a day trip outside the city.
The most accessible day trips from Marrakech: the Agafay desert (rocky plateau about 45 minutes away, a desert atmosphere without the dunes), the Ourika valley or Toubkal area (Atlas Mountains, fresh air, Berber villages, hiking possible), or Essaouira (Atlantic coastal city, about 2.5 hours by road — a long day or an overnight trip).
This format suits families well, couples alternating sightseeing and wandering, and travellers using Marrakech as their main destination.
A week: the relaxed pace
A week in Marrakech completely changes the experience. You move out of 'ticking boxes' mode and into the rhythm of the city — mornings at a Medina café, afternoons in quieter museums (Marrakech Museum, Ben Youssef Medersa), evenings without a set plan.
A week also allows two or three excursions without feeling rushed: a day in Agafay, a day in Ourika, an overnight in Essaouira. What is not possible in a week without exhausting yourself: reaching the Sahara (the Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga dunes are 8–10 hours from Marrakech — it is a journey in its own right, not a day trip).
A week suits travellers who genuinely want to immerse themselves, families who need free time at the riad, and people combining Marrakech with a restful riad stay.
The Sahara: not a day trip
A frequent question: 'can you see the Sahara dunes from Marrakech?' The honest answer is no, not in one day. The main dune fields (Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, Erg Chigaga near M'Hamid) are 8 to 10 hours by road from Marrakech. A realistic round trip requires at least 2 overnight stays away from Marrakech.
If the Sahara is a priority, plan either a stay of at least 8–9 days including Marrakech plus desert nights, or a dedicated circuit from Marrakech returning via Fes or Ouarzazate. Our concierge team can advise on the best options for your dates.
The Agafay desert — a rocky plateau with an authentic desert feel — is accessible as a day trip from Marrakech. It is not the Sahara, but it is a good alternative for those short on days.
What kind of traveller are you?
The ideal length depends as much on your profile as on the list of sights. A traveller who wants to see everything quickly will be satisfied in 3 days. A traveller who likes sitting in cafés, talking to shopkeepers, reading on the riad courtyard — they need 6 or 7.
First visit: we suggest 4 to 5 days. Enough to discover the city without skimming it, with one excursion. Return visit: 3 days can be enough if you already know the highlights and just want to find the atmosphere again. Group or family trip: plan one extra day — schedules take time to coordinate, mornings take longer.
Our local team can help you build a programme around your dates and style. No off-the-shelf itinerary — a conversation on WhatsApp is all it takes.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need to visit Marrakech? +
3 full days is the satisfying minimum for a first visit. 4 to 5 days is the most recommended length: it covers the Medina at a comfortable pace and leaves room for one day trip (Agafay, Ourika or Essaouira). A week allows a more relaxed pace with several excursions.
Can you visit Marrakech in 2 days? +
Two days is possible but frustrating. You tick Jemaa el-Fna, the souks and maybe Majorelle, but the city stays superficial. If you only have two days, focus on the Medina and Majorelle Garden — and accept that you will be coming back.
Can you do a Sahara day trip from Marrakech? +
No, not in a single day. The main dune fields (Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga) are 8–10 hours from Marrakech by road. A realistic round trip requires a minimum of 2 overnight stays away from Marrakech. If you want desert scenery in a day from Marrakech, the Agafay desert (about 45 minutes away) is a good alternative.
What is the best time of year to visit Marrakech? +
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most pleasant for temperatures. Summer (June–August) is hot — very hot in Marrakech. Winter is mild during the day but can be chilly in the evenings. See our guide to the best time to visit for more detail.
Is Marrakech suitable for families with children? +
Yes, with a little extra time planned in and accommodation with a courtyard or pool for downtime. Children tend to love Jemaa el-Fna (snake charmers, musicians, juice stalls). Plan 4 to 5 days minimum so the pace stays enjoyable for everyone.
Is it better to stay in the Medina or in Guéliz? +
For an authentic experience, the Medina. A riad in the Medina places you at the heart of the souks and the buzz — with the tranquillity of a private courtyard as soon as you step through the door. Guéliz (the modern quarter) is quieter and more convenient by car, but you lose the immersion. Our concierge team can guide you depending on your priorities.
