Rental scams mostly target travellers who pay via untraceable means or who book a property without ever speaking to a real person. This guide lists the most common red flags and simple habits that reduce the risk to almost zero, whether you book through a platform or directly with a host.

Verify the host's identity and the property's real existence
Your first line of defence is making sure the host is an identifiable person or organisation with a name, a phone number and, ideally, a verifiable physical address. A legitimate property has no reason to withhold any of this.
Search the riad or host name across independent sources: Google Maps, travel forums, social media. If the address does not appear on Maps, if the listing photos do not match geolocated images available online, or if the host cannot name a specific street or neighbourhood, proceed with caution.
An active WhatsApp contact who answers concrete questions ('is the pool private or shared?', 'how many bedrooms on the ground floor?') is a good sign. Silence or vague answers are a red flag.
Insist on written confirmation before any payment
Whatever platform or channel you use, always ask for a written summary before sending a deposit or signing anything. That summary must state: the total price (taxes included), exact check-in and check-out dates, what is included (breakfast, cleaning, linen, parking), cancellation conditions, and the host or agency's full contact details.
