Marrakech Menara Airport → Medina: how to reach your riad

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is roughly 15 minutes by car from the city centre and the Medina. But here is what nobody tells you before you arrive: cars cannot drive into the narrow lanes of the Medina (the derbs). Your transfer will drop you at the nearest vehicle access point, and a porter with a wheeled cart then walks your luggage to the door of your riad. Three options are available: the official airport taxi (agree the fare before setting off), a pre-booked private shuttle, or a transfer arranged directly by your riad through our concierge team. Pre-booking the transfer and porter coordination is strongly recommended to avoid any surprise on arrival — especially if you are landing with heavy luggage or late at night.

  • For taxis, agree the fare before you get in — never leave without a clear price.

The key thing nobody tells you about arriving in the Medina

Marrakech has two faces: the modern city centre (Guéliz, Hivernage) where cars move freely, and the historic Medina — a labyrinth of lanes often too narrow for any motorised vehicle. If your riad is in the Medina (which is the case for most authentic riads), your driver will not be able to drop you directly at the front door.

The standard procedure: the vehicle drops you at the nearest accessible point to your riad — often at the entrance of a derb or on an accessible square. There, a local porter is waiting with a wheeled cart to transport your luggage through the lanes to the riad door. This walk usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to around ten minutes depending on where the riad sits.

It is a beautiful introduction to the Medina — but if you are not expecting it, arriving with heavy bags, in the dark, or in summer heat, it can be stressful. Pre-arranging your transfer with porter coordination removes that friction entirely.

Option 1: the official airport taxi

At the arrivals exit of Menara Airport you will find official taxis. These are licensed vehicles — always prefer them over the informal touts you may encounter just outside the terminal.

The key rule: agree the fare before you get in. Ask for the price to the Medina or to your riad's specific address. If the quoted amount seems high, it is perfectly normal to negotiate or compare with another driver. If you are unsure of the going rate, message us before you arrive — our team will give you an honest current range.

The taxi will drop you at the nearest point accessible by car to your riad. It is then down to you (or your riad) to have arranged a porter for the last stretch on foot. If you have not organised this in advance, your driver may sometimes help you find someone on the spot, but nothing is guaranteed.

Option 2: pre-booked private shuttle or car

Many shuttle and private-car-with-driver services operate from Marrakech Airport. The advantage: the price is fixed before the journey, a comfortable vehicle awaits you at the arrivals exit, and there is no negotiation required after a long flight.

The drop-off point is the same: the nearest vehicle-accessible point to your riad. A good provider will know the exact access point and can coordinate with a porter if you mention it when booking.

Our concierge can arrange this transfer through trusted local partners. You share your flight details on WhatsApp, we handle everything — including the porter for your luggage right to the riad door.

Option 3: riad-arranged transfer (recommended)

If you are staying in a My Kasbah riad, the concierge can organise your airport transfer from start to finish: a driver meets you at arrivals with your name on a sign, drives you to the drop-off point, and a coordinated porter takes over with a cart to the riad door. The team is available 24/7 via WhatsApp.

This is the smoothest option because our team knows the exact location of each riad, the vehicle access points, and the local porters for each neighbourhood. No unpleasant surprises, no negotiating on the pavement after a night flight.

To book your transfer, send your flight number and arrival time to WhatsApp (+212 711 529 349) at least 24 hours before landing. Payment goes directly to the team — no platform commission.

Public transport from the airport

A public bus line serves the airport and connects to the city centre. This is the least expensive option for a solo traveller with minimal luggage who already knows Marrakech.

If you are travelling with heavy baggage, in a group, or if this is your first time in Marrakech, the public bus is generally not well suited to reaching a Medina riad directly: you will still need to walk a significant distance from the stop, and navigating the Medina with suitcases can be disorienting the first time.

Practical tips for a stress-free arrival

Have your riad's exact address written down — and ideally GPS coordinates or the derb name. Medina addresses can be complex and drivers may need the neighbourhood name (e.g. Bab Doukkala, Mouassine, Derb Debachi).

If you are arriving late at night or very early in the morning, let your riad know in advance. The My Kasbah team can organise arrivals at any hour, but it needs to be planned ahead.

Carry some local currency for porters if you have not pre-arranged your transfer through the riad. A tip is appreciated and is customary.

In peak season (December–January, March–April, July–August), taxi queues can be longer. If you have a late flight or a tight schedule, a pre-booked private vehicle saves the wait.

Official taxi vs private shuttle vs riad-arranged transfer

Each option has its strengths depending on your traveller profile.

CriterionOfficial taxiPrivate shuttle / carRiad-arranged transfer
Price Negotiate on the spot before boarding Fixed in advance, no surprise

Porter coordination Not included — handle on the spot On request if mentioned at booking

For a first visit to Marrakech, the riad-arranged transfer is the most seamless option — contact us at least 24 hours before landing.

How to get from Marrakech Menara Airport to your riad in the Medina

  1. 1

Collect your bags and exit to the arrivals hall

After passport control and baggage claim, head to the arrivals exit. Ignore informal touts inside or just outside the terminal building.

  2. 2

    Choose your transport option

Official taxi (agree the price before getting in), private shuttle if pre-booked (your driver waits with a name sign), or your My Kasbah driver if you arranged the transfer through the concierge.

  3. 3

Journey to the vehicle drop-off point (approx. 15 min)

The driver takes you to the nearest vehicle-accessible point to your riad — at the entrance of a derb or on an accessible square. This point is typically a short walk from the riad itself.

  4. 4

The porter takes over with your luggage

A local porter with a wheeled cart takes your bags and guides you through the Medina lanes to your riad door. The walk typically takes a few minutes to around ten minutes.

  5. 5

    Welcome at the riad

The riad team welcomes you on arrival. If you are arriving outside normal hours, the My Kasbah team is reachable 24/7 on WhatsApp to coordinate the welcome.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from the airport to the Medina? +

Roughly 15 minutes by car depending on traffic. In peak season or at busy times the journey may run slightly longer. Add a few minutes on foot through the Medina from the vehicle drop-off point to your riad door.

Can a taxi drop me directly at my riad door? +

Generally not. The Medina's derbs (lanes) are too narrow for motorised vehicles. The taxi drops you at the nearest accessible point, and a porter walks your luggage the rest of the way. This is normal — your riad team can coordinate the porter if you flag it in advance.

How much does the airport taxi from Marrakech cost? +

We do not publish a fixed rate because prices vary by season, negotiation and the precise location of your riad. The key is to agree the fare before you get in. If you want an honest current range before you arrive, message us on WhatsApp — our local team will give you the up-to-date figure.

Does My Kasbah arrange airport transfers? +

Yes. Our concierge arranges airport transfers (arrivals and departures) for all My Kasbah stays. A driver meets you at arrivals, and the porter is coordinated to your riad door. Reach us 24/7 on WhatsApp +212 711 529 349.

Is it better to pre-book or can I just take a taxi on arrival? +

You can take an official taxi on arrival, but pre-booking is strongly recommended if you are travelling with heavy luggage, arriving late at night, or if this is your first time in Marrakech. Porter coordination in the Medina is particularly smoother when it is planned ahead.

Is there a bus from the airport? +

A public bus line serves the airport and connects to the city centre. It is a viable option for a solo light-luggage traveller who already knows Marrakech. With suitcases or when heading directly to a Medina riad, it is considerably less practical.
