Chefchaouen

The Blue City Perched in the Mountains

Chefchaouen, Morocco's "blue pearl", sits high in the Rif mountains at 600 m altitude. Its lavender-blue painted alleyways, waterfalls, craft workshops and peaceful atmosphere make it one of the most photogenic cities in the world.

About

Several theories explain the blue: Sephardic Jewish tradition (blue symbolises the sky and divine protection), a natural mosquito repellent, or simple aesthetics. Whatever the reason, the entire city, walls, staircases, benches, window ledges, unfolds in 50 shades of blue.

Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the central square, is lined with cafés and the kasbah. The Bouzaafar viewpoint offers a panorama of the city and Rif mountains. The Akchour waterfall, 30 minutes away, is a magnificent natural site for hiking and swimming.

Local crafts are renowned: weaving, leather, pottery, woollen garments. Prices are 30-50% lower than in Marrakech.
