Ouarzazate & Aït Benhaddou

The Valley of Cinema and Kasbahs

Ouarzazate, the "gateway to the desert", and the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou are among Morocco's most iconic stops. Hollywood film studios, pisé kasbahs, red Dadès and Rose valleys.

About

The ksar of Aït Benhaddou is a UNESCO-listed (1987) fortified village in raw earth. It served as a backdrop for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones and Prince of Persia. Crossing the river to reach the village is free; climbing through the alleyways is sublime.

Ouarzazate is home to Atlas Film Studios (the largest in Africa), the Taourirt kasbah (300 rooms) and the cinema museum. The road between Marrakech and Ouarzazate crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) with exceptional Atlas panoramas.

The Rose Valley (30 min) and the Dadès Valley (1h) offer red and ochre landscapes, kasbahs and palm groves. The "road of a thousand kasbahs" is one of Morocco's most beautiful.
